COSMETIC TATTOOING

  • Cosmetic tattooing is a form of tattooing that focuses on cosmetic enhancements. This is done either manually or with a machine. If you research PMU techniques it may seem like there are endless options. However, the majority of the terms you'll come across essentially produce the same or similar end results. Many terms are just catchy names artists invent for marketing purposes.

  • One should consider it a permanent tattoo. However, cosmetic tattoos will fade considerably over time and might disappear altogether. UV light, wear and tear on the skin, age, and facial products will contribute to the tattoo fading.

We actually want to pigment the fade. Ideally, the pigment should be faded about 50% or more before performing a colour boost service. As pigment breaks down and is exposed to UV light, the colours will often shift in hue. Colour boosts are required to maintain the colour and shape. How often they are required depends on several factors such as the person's lifestyle, age, skin type & condition, colour and technique used.

  • IAny one who…

    Finds makeup to be frustrating.

Would like to save time and energy in the morning.

    Lacks confidence without makeup.

Has a lifestyle that makes wearing makeup/maintaining makeup difficult. E.g. Nurses working long hours, athletes, campers, on-call workers, mums... the list goes on!

Would like to restore changes to their appearance resulting from injury, illness, or aging.

Has unsteady hands or poor eyesight that makes it difficult to apply makeup.

  • Pregnant or Breastfeeding

    Must be 18 or older

On Accutane medication (Must be off for 1 year)

    History of keloid scarring.

    Undergoing chemotherapy

Regularly suntan and don't want to use sunscreen or protect your tattoo.

Don't want to commit to colour boosts.

Clients who suffer from severe anxiety are highly encouraged to book a consultation appointment to begin with.

  • Those who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid these procedures due to the potential risks involved for them and their child. There are numerous reasons why expecting or breastfeeding mothers should not have these procedures, including the following:

    Possibility of Infection

The most important reason a pregnant or nursing mother should not have cosmetic tattooing is because there is always a chance of infection. Any breaking of the skin always carries a risk of infection, even though the procedure is done in the most hygienic manner possible, an infection can still occur from inappropriate care afterwards. For example, if the tattoo is touched with dirty hands or contaminated makeup is put over it during the healing process, these can cause an infection.

    Pigment Retention

Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause the body to reject the pigment of a cosmetic tattoo. Hormones can also cause more bleeding resulting in pigment rejection. Once the body has returned to normal hormonal levels, the body will accept the ink better.

    Anesthetic

For the comfort of the client, we apply numbing creams and anesthetics to the area before performing the procedure. The skin absorbs these medications, and they make their way into the bloodstream, which is unlikely but could affect the baby negatively as a result.

    Discomfort

Often pregnancy can make us more sensitive in many areas. If discomfort is felt during the treatment if performed when pregnant could lead to increased heart rate translating through to the baby causing negative effects.

    Facial skin and tissue changes

Fluid retention is a common side effect during pregnancy which can slightly alter your face shape. It is important that any cosmetic tattoo is performed when your skin is in its accurate form. Stretching and thinning of the skin in pregnancy can make it more sensitive than usual.

    Ingredients

While every effort is made to use only the safest pigments for cosmetic tattoos, we simply do not know enough about tattoo pigments to know if they are safe for pregnant or nursing women. Because women’s immune systems can also be altered during pregnancy, they may have an unprecedented allergic reaction to any of the products used during the procedure.

  • We use a 2 phase topical numbing gel before and during your treatment to make sure you're as comfortable as possible. Many clients even fall asleep during the service!

  • Absolutely! Born Brows Artistry follows a strict set of protocols from Western Australian guidelines to ensure maximum safety and prevention of cross contamination. All needles are single-use and opened in front of you before we start, then discarded in a sharps container at the end of your appointment. Most equipment is disposable and disposed of into a clinical waste bin. Measuring tools are sterilised and Hospital-grade disinfectant is used to sterilise and clean surfaces and equipment.

BROWS

  • Eyebrow Microblading, also known as Feather touch, cosmetic tattooing or micro-pigmentation, is a method of creating semi-permanent eyebrows, using delicate strokes drawn by hand to mimic the natural hairs. This is achieved by implanting colour micro-pigment into the skin’s surface with a tiny, sterile, disposable needle. The results leave you with defined, natural-looking brows and give the illusion of fullness that will enhance your unique facial features.

  • Of course you are, there are probably many reasons as to why you will feel nervous, and it is entirely normal. The treatments are non invasive, and the ambience at Born Brows is calm and relaxing. We strive to be very thorough with informing you about the ins and outs of the treatment, and if there is anything we haven't covered, you will have plenty of time to ask as many questions as you need until you feel completely 100% comfortable. We are renowned for our patience and listening to you.

  • This can be discussed either prior or during your consultation/appointment. Taking into consideration skin type suitability, your usual makeup routine, client preference, and what will be most suitable for your facial features overall.

  • Based on your preferences and expert guidance, your first visit will allow us to customise your experience with the right shape and shade for your face shape. We work with you as an individual, no 2 clients are the same at Born Brows! Only once you are 100% happy with the outline and colour during the consultation do we proceed to the treatment.

The perfection visit allows us to see how the eyebrows have healed and to see how they are retaining colour. Further dimension is added as necessary.

  • Your brows can last from 6months to 2 years depending on skin type, lifestyle, sun exposure and how you care for them.

The effects of Semi-permanent brows last anywhere between 8 and 24 months. The longevity of the pigment will depend on your skin type, lifestyle and environmental factors. Clients with a more oily skin type, exercise alot and are exposed to UV frequently will tend to last around the 8-10 month mark before needing a top up, but those with normal skin can last anywhere from 12- 24 months. It also depends on how you continue to care for your brows. Wearing SPF, avoiding retinol & AHAs on the area and keeping them hydrated will all help with the longevity of your brows retention.

  • After a consultation, there is one main appointment where the tattooing is performed, followed by a perfection visit appointment 4 – 8 weeks later, during which any adjustments can be made. Follow-up colour boost appointments every 8-24 months are recommended to keep the brows in optimum condition. *Please note sometimes due to skin type or not following strict precare/aftercare a 2nd Perfection Visit can be required.

  • No! Oddly enough we get asked this quite frequently. The whole point of this process is to enhance your natural eyebrows or sculpt eyebrows for those who have very little to no eyebrow hair. In either case, we like to keep the bulk of your existing eyebrow hair, tweezing only where needed to enhance the shape we are trying to achieve

  • Avoid the use of skin thinners such as Vitamin A, glycolic acids, exfoliation on the eyebrow area 2 weeks before your appointment.

Do not consume alcohol or caffeine for 24-48hours prior to your appointment.

Avoid blood thinner medication and also vitamins and supplements such as aspirin, ibuprofen, niacin and fish oil supplements.

Avoid sun exposure for 14 days prior to and after your appointment.

No botox or fillers minimum 2 weeks prior to your appointment

  • The colour will appear very rich for 48 hours immediately after the treatment as the colour oxidises. They will then begin to fade and go patchy during the days following as they flake and heal. Initially they will get lighter around day 10 as new skin heals over the top. The pigment will then begin to even out and push back through giving a more accurate colour around week 3-4. Week 4-8 you will be required to come back for your perfect visit. You should avoid getting the area wet for 7-10 days following treatment and your artist will guide you through a post-care treatment plan.

  • Scratching or removal of dry skin/flakiness.

Direct water on the eyebrow tattoo and the use of cleansers, soaps and heavy creams.

Exercising, activities that will cause sweating for 7 days.

Swimming pools, hot tubs or steam rooms for 7-10days.

    UV exposure.

Laser light therapy, as it can darken/lighten or distort the pigment.

Exfoliants, retinol or AHA’s on the area ongoing after the appointment (causes premature fading).

    Massages, facials or skin treatments.

Application of any brow makeup for 7days

Sleeping with your face touching the pillow can cause premature flaking and fading.

  • Carefully pat your brows with moistened wipes or cotton rounds before you go to bed.

Apply a thin layer of aftercare ointment provided with cotton swab.

Clean brows gently 1-2 times per day.

Apply ointment 2-3 times per day or anytime brows feel tight and dry.

LIPS

  • Lip Blushing is the most natural lip tattoo available. The result is a lightly pigmented lip similar to a tint. Lip Blushing can last from 2-5 years.

    Correct lip symmetry.

Give the appearance of fuller lips.

    Even out uneven lip colour.

    Brighten pale tone lips.

    Warm-up cool toned lips.

  • Cold Sores- If you have a history of cold sores you must take preventative precautions. The micro-trauma to the lips will often trigger a cold sore. You can do this by obtaining a medical prescription for cold sore medication. Make sure to get enough medication for your perfection visit! Or you can take over the counter antiviral cold sore medication pre and post-procedure.

  • Results will always vary from person to person, after your initial session and the perfection visit, your results should last between 2-5 years. Additional colour boosts may be required depending on the person and look desired. Cosmetic tattooing ink is not the same as body art ink, and by design it does not last as long as body art ink.

  • There can be moderate swelling, redness and sometimes bruising for the first 2- 5 days. The majority of the swelling usually reduces in the first 2 hours and the rest up to 48 hours.

Apply a ziploc bag filled with water and ice for no more than 20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling.

It is essential to keep the lips well-cleaned and moisturised to allow them to fully recover and importantly to prevent infection and irritation. Wash the lips with a fragrance-free cleanser, wipes or water on a cotton pad.

Expect your lips to flake and peel. This is normal after lip blushing and should last about a week. If there is any flaking, do not pick, and allow the flakes or dry skin to come off on its own. Use the ointment to reduce the itching and dryness.

Maintain moisture levels and encourage faster healing, apply the aftercare ointment provided with a clean cotton tip as frequently as needed. (Minimum of 2-3times daily)

Do not sleep on your face during the healing process. This can lead to premature peeling and fading.

Avoid any activities or lifestyle choices that can cause excessive sweating or skin irritation. Steer clear of that HIIT class, hot sauna, and swimming pool.

Avoid spicy and salty foods and kissing.

Avoid direct sunlight and wearing beauty products on the lips too during the healing process for up to 10days.

Expect the colour to eventually lighten by up to 50-70% once the healing process is complete.

Colour may appear uneven at different stages of healing. Be patient. This is a process that does not yield immediate results.

It can take up to 6-8weeks for the colour to fully show.

  • Do not drink caffeine or alcohol at least 24-48 hours before your treatment.

Do not take aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oils, vitamin E, niacin, at least 72 hours prior to your procedure.

Do not take any prescription blood thinners at least 48 hours prior to and after your procedure. (Do not discontinue without doctors consent).

Discontinue any vitamin A skin care products (Retin-A, retinols) close to the lip area at least two weeks prior to your procedure. **We recommend NOT using these products over or around the tattooed area after you receive your cosmetic tattoo. It could cause fading and distortion of color.**

Discontinue use of AHA (chemical exfoliation) skin care products close to the area to be tattooed at least one week prior to your procedure.

No laser or electrolysis on or around the treatment area one week prior to procedure.

No Botox or fillers in the procedure area less than two week prior.

Plan trips or events a minimum of 7 days after the procedure.

Do not have any chemical peels, dermabrasions, or any other intense treatments which will cause faster skin cell rejuvenating and cause skin irritation 3-4 weeks before procedure.

If you have been on prescription Accutane in the past, you MUST wait at least one year before considering this procedure.

Avoid sun tanning exposure for 7 -10days before and after your procedure. If you show up for your appointment with sunburn, you will need to reschedule and will forfeit your booking fee. As your skin exfoliates from a sunburn, it will take the pigment with it.

Bring in your favorite lip colour if you have a specific colour you want to achieve.

Please disclose prior to booking If you have existing lip cosmetic tattooing.

  • Antivirals

As a necessary precaution, if you have ever had a cold sore in your life, you will be required to take an antiviral prescribed by your doctor or pharmacist over the counter.

Cold sore outbreaks are often triggered by stress or trauma to the lips and skin and can effect the healing and results. Therefore if you are a carrier, lip blush will likely cause an outbreak if you do not take an antiviral medication prior. The medication should be taken as prescribed pre and post treatment.

    Lip Scrub

It is vital to come to your appointment with smooth, moisturised lips for the best results.

Please use a sugar scrub that you can easily make at home or purchase from a pharmacy for 3-4 nights prior to your lip blush treatment. Do it once more the morning before your appointment. Scrub lips for 2-3 minutes and wipe off the excess. Moisturise lips right after with a thick mask of coconut oil, shea butter, or intensive lip balm. Let that sit for 15-20 minutes.

Keep Lips Moisturised and Stay Hydrated.

Drinking at least 2-3L of water per day will keep you and your lips well hydrated. Please use a hydrating lip balm regularly in the lead up to your treatment. This will ensure the best results for the pigment to deposit during and speedy healing process after.

    Eat

A lip blush procedure takes roughly 2.5 hours from start to finish including the consultation. Make sure you have something in your stomach as you may find eating difficult immediately after.
